Chapter 3
Gwen glanced at the clock and realised that she only had a few minutes before the morning meeting. She knew that it was going to be a busy and stressful day, but she was more than up for the challenge. Gwen nervously entered the conference room at the Sydney Morning Herald, where a work meeting was about to commence.
âGood morning, everyone,â Gwen said, taking a deep breath and addressing the room. Her heart was racing as she took a seat next to Jake. As the meeting began, Gwen and Jake glanced at each other, silently acknowledging the pressure they were both under. She knew that these meetings could be intense and that George could be demanding. Gwen listened intently as the editors discussed the dayâs top climate stories. The first story was about a deadly heat wave that had hit Europe, causing widespread health issues and deaths. The reporters were discussing the need to inform the public about the dangers of extreme heat and the need for governments to take action to mitigate the effects of climate change. The second story was about a massive wildfire that had broken out in the Amazon rainforest, leading to the displacement of indigenous communities and the destruction of habitats for numerous animal species. The reporters emphasised the urgent need for governments and international organisations to take steps to protect the Amazon and its diverse ecosystems. The reporters discussed the need to inform the public about how to prepare for these extreme weather events and the need for governments to invest in disaster preparedness and response measures. As the meeting continued, the editors also discussed a new report on the devastating effects of plastic pollution on marine life. The report highlighted that the worldâs oceans were filling up with plastic at an alarming rate, with more than 8000,000 tonnes of plastic being dumped into the ocean every year. As the meeting continued, Gwen began to feel burdened by the weight of the stories. It was clear that the global climate crisis was only getting worse, and that urgent action was needed to address it. She couldnât help but wonder what kind of world her children would inherit if things continued to deteriorate at the current rate.
Georgeâs stern expression softened, and he looked directly at Gwen.
âGwenâs words resonated with viewers across the country, and her report quickly went viral, sparking a nationwide conversation about the urgent need for action on climate change. This was the most viewers weâve ever had for a storm coverage. Your exceptional reporting really made the viewers feel like they were there. Great job, Gwen!â he exclaimed. Gwen felt a wave of relief wash over her, followed by a surge of pride. She had been worried that her coverage of the storm had fallen short, but Georgeâs praise reassured her that she had done a great job. Feeling emboldened, Gwen leant forward and listened intently as George began to outline the next set of assignments for the team. She was ready for whatever challenge came her way.
